Torrey
Pagosa Springs
Roughly four hours after leaving the Dirty Devil, I reached Pagosa Springs, CO. As you head north from Pagosa Springs on Highway 160 you ride through a beautiful valley before ascending over Wolf Creek Pass and into the highlands where the Great Sands Dunes can be seen from many miles away. Here is a shot of the fall colors:

Three hours later, after this shot was taken, I was back home again safe and sound with another great Torrey ride completed.
Dirty Devil
After riding the surrounding area of Torrey yesterday, we packed up camp and began our ride home taking Highway 24 east to Highway 95. The following are pictures from atop the Dirty Devil overlook:
Highway 95 continues on from this point for many scenic miles. Eventually Brant headed south through the Valley of the Gods to Arizona and I to the east to ride through the southern parts of Colorado.
Goblin Valley
While in Torrey, UT we spent the afternoon riding what is called “Sweeper Madness”. The start of the run can be reached by taking Highway 24 out of Torrey to Lyman where you ride Highway 72 to I-70. The sweepers are numerous and yield well to high speeds. Once reaching I-70, you head east until you pick up Highway 24 again which leads to Hanksville. Just before Hanksville is a little state park known as Goblin Valley. Here are a some shots from this beautiful and mesmerizing area (a true hidden treasure of the area):
Wonderland RV Campsite
As mentioned earlier, I returned to Torrey this year for Torrey XX to catch up with an old friend as well as other familiar faces. We camped at the Wonderland RV which IS my favorite spot to stay while in Torrey. The site is always well maintained including the bathroom/shower facilities. Here are a few pictures from the day:

Returning to Torrey
Overview
I recently tweeted about heading back to Torrey, Utah to ride for three days with fellow BMW riders this September. It has been five years since I last rode in Torrey with a great group of experienced and well-traveled riders. I’ll be looking to meet up with Brant - an old friend and fellow rider (arriving from the south). Actually, its due to Brant’s influence that I got into riding and if I didn’t have to code as much as I do, I would spend all my days traveling every scenic road this world has to offer (paved or not)!
Details
Anyway, if you are interested in joining in on the fun, here are the details:
- When: September 24-26, 2010 (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Departure is at 8am at either my place or some central location that works for everyone involved.
- Where: Torrey, Utah
- Lodging: The options are many. I prefer to camp, so will be looking to book a camp site at the Wonderland Resort RV Park (435-425-3775, Junction of Highways 12 & 24). I’ve stayed there several times. Great place. They have shower facilities if you need them.
Route
The whole point of Torrey (as with any trip) is not the destination but the routes to get there and back. Here is a rough idea what I’m thinking about taking to get there. I’ve traveled many of these roads, so if you haven’t experienced these roads yet, you’re in for a real treat:
Registration
If you are interested in joining and are based in the Front Range area (Boulder, Denver, Colorado Springs, etc) let me know and I’d be happy have you along. The more the merrier! It does help if you are on a BMW bike but any type of rider is welcome as long as you are comfortable traveling 500+ mile days.
