Feed Readers (RSS Readers)

People often ask me what my favorite feed reader is and, in my opinion, there is only one: Feed Demon (paid, Windows only) or its brother NetNewsWire (paid, Mac OS only). However, there are others worth checking out that I’ve played with or experienced by helping others:

  • Vienna - Free. Mac OS only. A fast and lightweight stand-alone application.
  • RSS Popper - Free. Windows only. Adds additional capacities to Microsoft Outlook. Tread lightly with this as does allows you to get all information in one location but based on other experiences it doesn’t work like it should. I’ve seen issues where it won’t let you edit feeds, has missing toolbar icons, etc.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird - Free. Platform independent. This is simply a great e-mail client comparable to Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, etc. However, it also has capabilities for subscribing to and managing RSS subscriptions.
  • RSS Wizz - Free. Platform independent. Adds feeds to a pop-out sidebar in Firefox that can be revealed or hidden just like your bookmarks or history sidebars.
  • Sage - Free. Platform independent. Adds feeds to a pop-out sidebar in Firefox that can be revealed or hidden just like your bookmarks or history sidebars. Based on feedback from other people, they seem to prefer this plugin over RSS Wizz.
  • Google Reader - Free. Platform independent. Mark is a big fan of this reader and if you want to get good with it, you should talk to him or check out his web page. Additionally, consider reading Seven Google Reader Tips and Tricks.

If the list above does not help get you started, then check out a more comprehensive list from About. They have lists of free readers, paid readers, and readers for MacOS users.
